The Monterey International Pop Music Festival was a three-day concert event held June 16th - June 18th, 1967 at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in Monterey, CA. Crowd estimates for the festival ranged from 50 thousand to 90 thousand people.
The Monterey 67 Pop Festival is remembered for the first major american appereances by Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Ravi Shankar and the first large-scale concert of Janis Joplin. Jefferson Airplane, Otis Reeding and The Mamas and The Papas also performed at the festival.
The Monterey Pop Festival embodied the theme of California as a focal point for the counterculture and is generally regarded as one of the beginnings of the “Summer of Love" in 1967.
The first rock festival (the KFRC Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival) had been held just one week earlier at Mount Tamalpais in Marin County. Monterey was the first widely promoted and heavily attended rock festival, and became the template for future music festivals, notably the Woodstock Festival two years later.
